‘It’s a triumph… the best new record this year’ **** Mojo
Once upon a time there was a man called Dan who used a name called Manitoba and then changed it to CARIBOU. He made music full of intricacy and joy and sunshine and heart and magic. Every ear that his music touched fell under its spell. Then April rolled around and there was a new record to fall in love with. It was called ‘Swim‘. And it was wonderful.
Basically what I’m saying is if you’ve been waiting at a rural bus stop for 10 years on your way to woolies to see what’s fresh in the musical bargain bucket then by now you may have missed Caribou. Which is a disaster because the music is so life affirmingly mesmerisingly splendid that failure to discover soon may result in your life having been totally futile.
Fortunately you can click here and Spotify will provide relief.
Just heard that BABYBIRD ‘s – Johnny Depp directed – video for ‘Unloveable’ has been banned on tv becaus it features a hanging (Mary Whitehouse 1 Good sense 0). Still, let’s be honest, this can only be a good thing for stirring up some good attention and sending inquisitive minds onto the internet to see for themselves (especially since no-one watches music tv on an actual tv anymore). So, really: Good sense 2 Mary Whitehouse 1. You be the judge.
In other news.. LAURA MARLING released album no.2, ‘I Speak Because I Can’, on Monday and it’s getting a fantastic, nay earth shattering, reaction. Here’s what The Times say / The Independent say / The Guardian say. And watch the video for ‘Rambling man’ below // Also, Nite Jewel has remixed CARIBOU‘s new single, ‘Odessa’. Dreamy Dreamy stuff. Listen here// And more from PENGUIN PRISON – free download of remixes and the majestic ‘The Worse it Gets’ here //That is all. For now.
The dome is not just a spectacular over-budget millenium disappointment. It is also a village hall style venue in Kentish Town where, a mere three days ago, FOUR TET spun the aural deliciousness that is ‘There is Love in You’. Support and DJ setting courtesy of NATHAN FAKE and CARIBOU, the latter playing new tracks from the masterful new LP ‘swim’. If it were opposites day I would say that no-one smiled and everyone could have enjoyed it more. You do the maths.
FOUR TET – Plastic People
CARIBOU – Odessa
– Kieran Hebden in the round. Nice.
