Fake Blood

The most played track in Chrysalis HQ over the past few weeks is from one of the most diverse, exciting, but also mysterious artists in our catalogue. The track is ‘I Think I Like It’ and the artist is FAKE BLOOD, aka Theo Keating. He’s produced some of the most cutting-edge, cross-genre dance music of recent years. Though, as influential as his music has been, very little is known about the man himself. And that’s the way he likes it. The music does all the talking that is needed.

Each project Theo has worked on has had its own unique sound. As one half of THE WISEGUYS he produced some well known big-beat tracks such as ‘Start The Commotion’ and ‘Ooh La La’. His next incarnation saw a massive change in sound, as DJ Touché, the sound evolved from big beats to tight, big-room electro. Tracks such as ‘The Paddle’ and ‘She’s At The Club’ became the soundtrack to any electro party worth going to, but also experimental AND fun, and appealed to DJ’s and clubs across the music spectrum as a result.

This original approach to electronic music continued with the creation of THE BLACK GHOSTS – a band formed by Theo and Simon William Lord (previously in Simian). Tinged with a certain darkness the music was more song based and melodic yet still maintained a smooth electronic sound and had its eyes firmly on the dancefloor. It was the perfect mash-up of indie sensibility and electronic crispness and their self-titled album became a critics favourite last year. The track ‘Full Moon’ from the album also feautured in the Twilight film and soundtrack album.

The most recent project for Theo has been the wildly successful FAKE BLOOD. Tapping in to the mashed up world of wonky and fidget house it has pushed the boundaries of dance music. Last year’s dance smash ‘Mars’ became an essential in the box of every DJ, once again blurring genre borders and causing dancefloor mayhem. Following this up with a string of remixes for everyone from Unkle to Little Boots the name Fake Blood has now become synonymous with quality dance music. The most recent release is the ‘Fix Your Accent’ EP, featuring the aforementioned office favourite ‘ I Think I Like It’ and two other corkers in the form of ‘Fix Your Accent’ and ‘The Dozens’. Whilst maintaining all the familiar hallmarks it also shows a move into a more disco and house inspired sound as the next phase in the Fake Blood project gets underway.

The one constant in all of Theo Keating’s music has been its consistent attention to quality and high production values. Whatever direction his music takes in the future, whatever new guises emerge, you can be sure that these will aways remain. So for now we’ll once again let the music do the talking…
